Definition of a Speedometer
A speedometer is an instrument that measures and displays the instantaneous speed of a vehicle. Found in every modern automobile, motorcycle, and scooter, the speedometer tells the driver how fast the vehicle is traveling at any given moment. Speedometers typically display speed in miles per hour (mph) or kilometers per hour (km/h), and many modern units show both. A Brief History of the Speedometer
The first speedometer was patented by Croatian engineer Josip Belusic in 1888. However, the design that became the industry standard was created by German inventor Otto Schulze in 1902, who developed the eddy current speedometer. The first automobile manufacturer to offer a speedometer as standard equipment was Oldsmobile in 1901, followed by Ford in 1908 on the Model T. Early speedometers were costly mechanical devices, but mass production made them standard in all vehicles by the 1920s. How a Mechanical Speedometer Works
Traditional mechanical speedometers operate using a flexible cable driven by the vehicle's transmission or front wheel. The cable connects to a permanent magnet inside the speedometer housing. As the cable spins, the rotating magnet generates eddy currents in an aluminum cup placed nearby. These currents create a magnetic field that exerts a torque on the cup, causing it to rotate against a hairspring. The needle attached to the cup moves across a calibrated dial, indicating the vehicle's speed. The faster the cable spins, the stronger the eddy currents and the farther the needle deflects. This elegant analog mechanism requires no electrical power and has proven remarkably reliable.
How Digital Speedometers Work
Digital speedometers replace the mechanical cable and magnet with electronic sensors. A wheel speed sensor, often a Hall effect or variable reluctance sensor, detects the rotation of a gear or tone ring on the wheel or transmission output shaft. The sensor generates pulses that are sent to the vehicle's ECU or instrument cluster microcontroller. The processor calculates speed based on the pulse frequency and known tire circumference, then displays the value on an LCD or LED screen.
